The BLD Foundation’s charitable aim is the advancement of education of people of African, Asian, Caribbean and other ethnic minority backgrounds and those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Our focus is on diversity, social mobility and talent nurturing among these target groups and in so doing, changing lives.


About the Legal Launch Pad Programme

The programme is sponsored nationally by well-known organisations in the UK including Barclays, Baker McKenzie, DAC Beachcroft, the Government Legal Service (GLS), Hackney Council, Pinsent Masons, Reed Smith, Sidley Austin, the University of Law and Vodafone. Students on the programme gets lots of exposure to recruiters and career opportunities at these firms. Our charitable aim is achieved through our flagship Legal Gateway Scheme (LGS), providing access for those aged 13-30 to a wide range of opportunities in the legal industry; including training and information about the available opportunities and equipping participants with the skills to take advantage of these opportunities. The scheme runs nationwide with particular focus on London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.      

The Legal Launch Pad is a structured nine-month (January to September) intensive training, networking and mentoring programme open to those studying for a legal career. The aim of this programme is to help prepare participants for the legal profession by providing career and personal development avenues via training workshops, mentoring and work (vacation scheme and mini pupillage) placements. The LLP Programme is free to access for students (selection is by online application and telephone interview) and offers work placements; mock interviews; mentoring; high quality training workshops on commercial awareness, negotiation, application forms, CVs and assessment centres, presentation skills; networking and other opportunities

Who Can Apply?


Applicants Aged Criteria

Law Students


Second year and third year

Non-Law Students


Final year students and those doing their Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)

Graduate & Post Graduates


Those doing or who have completed postgradute legal education*, such as the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). 

*Recent graduates committed to pursuing a career in law and those currently studying for post graduate degrees are welcome to apply.


Other Requirements

To apply, you will need to:

  • Be UK (England / Wales) based
  • Be from a Black (Black African, Black British, Black Caribbean, Caribbean, Mixed), Asian (Asian British, Asian Bangladeshi, Asian Chinese, Asian Indian, Asian Other) or other ethnic minority group in the UK. We also support social mobility so applications of candidates from socially deprived backgrounds who are part of the first generation in their families to receive higher education will be considered.
  • Upload an offical university transcript (official or self-reported), and up to date CV and  portrait photo
  • Provide contact details for one academic and one employer / character reference.

In London and Manchester. You will be invited to attend the session closest to you.

Guaranteed Work Placement(s)

Spring/Summer placements likely to be in London, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Reading, Newcastle or Bristol. 

Successful applicants will be informed of their placements by February.

1-2 Weeks (March-August)

Passing Out Ceremony


September 2018


All successful candidates are allocated a mentor (a practising Barrister or Solicitor), and will recieve one-to-one mentoring between January and September.

After applications are initially screened, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and possibly invited to undertake a telephone interview. We will then check references before offering any places. All candidates will be told of the outcome of their application by the 30th November 2017.
